DISTRICT ELECTORAL ROLL REVISION BY COUNCIL Principally for the purpose of perusing the district electoral roll, the Temuka Borough Council held a special meeting on Tuesday evening when there were present —The Mayor (Mr A. W. Buzan) and Crs. E. Blackmore, W. F. Evans, P. H. Lynch, I. W. T. Baxter. W. H. McMillan, J. King, T. Dwan and G. Hancox. About 110 names were deleted and a similar number of applications for inclusion were approved. The Mayor and Crs. Evans and Blackmore were authorised to certify the roll in compliance with Municipal Corporations Act. The question of gazetting certain plants as noxious weeds within the borough wgs again under review, and It was decided to hold a special meeting on March 19 to consider a list brought forward by the Reserves Committee. Applications from the Pleasant Point md Temuka District High Schools for ihe use of the swimming baths on March 14 and 21 respectively were, granted. Mr J. Curry, who had held the contract for cleaning the Taumatakaha Creek for some years, tendered his resignation, which was accepted with regret. It was decided to write in appreciation of his services and to call tenders for the work. As representatives of the Council on the committee to make arrangements for the observance of Anzac Day, the Mayor, Cr. Hancox and the town clerk (Mr L. Butters) were appointed. The town clerk was granted leave to attend the Municipal Associations’ conference at Christchurch and the conference of town clerks. TECHNICAL BOARD A decision to investigate the possibility of adding classes in wireless, veterinary treatment, electrical engineering and other subjects to the curriculum was made at the monthly meeting of the Board of Managers of the Temuka Technical School on Tuesday evening. Mr J. T. Smart presided. A motion of sympathy with Mr H. Harris, the woolelassing instructor, in the death of his father, was passed. The director (Mr E. B. Cooper) reported that arrangements had been made for commencing the dressmaking class. No alteration had been made to the timetable of the day of the week for the class. Referring to the financial statement, Mr Cooper said that revenue for the year just closed totalled £96, comprising fees £46/2/6, voluntary contributions £3O/15/- and capitation £3/18/8, while expenditure amounted to £lO3/6/10. There was a credit balance of £5/1/-. The drift of Temuka children to Timaru to attend technical classes was discussed, it being pointed out that although the Temuka District High School could cater for the majority of subjects there were certain that could not be taught at Temuka. It was agreed that the woolelassing class commence on the first Monday in April and the dressmaking on March 12. The suggestion that the Board should undertake to arrange for an address on the handling of electricity was made by Mr J. O. J. Oliver, and it was agreed that the director investigate the possibilities of putting the suggestion into operation. MUNICIPAL BAND The committee of the Temuka Municipal Band held its monthly meeting on Tuesday evening. Present —Messrs A. E. Smith (in the chair), G. L. Collins, T. Edwards, J. Simpson and C. F. de Joux. Bandsman M. Mallett tendered his resignation from the band. It was decided to write asking him to reconsider his decision. Mr Collins mentioned that a nuisance was caused by children playing around the bandsmen when they were giving sacred concerts in the Domain. Suggestions that the police be asked to be present and that the children be told to keep away from the band were made. The latter suggestion was adopted. The suggestion that a concert be given in the theatre on a Sunday night after church was made, and it was left with the secretary to make enquiries as to rent. ATHLETIC CLUB. Arrangements for the special sports meeting on Easter Monday were made at a meeting of the committee of the Temuka Amateur Athletic Club on Tuesday eevning. Mr L, W. Parrant presided. Messrs W. S. Harbrow (secretary) and J. M. Ritchie were appointed an emergency committee to deal with all n atters arising for immediate consideration, and Mr H. Wilson was appointed to take charge of all side-shows. It was decided to appoint 10 gatekeepers, and that Mr W. Seeler be the official honorary master of ceremonies for all club dances. WOMEN’S BOWLING. Several junior members of the Temuka Ladies’ Bowling Club with the president (Mrs J. B. Davis) and Mrs W. L. Harrison, on Tuesday afternoon visited Geraldine where a friendly match with members of the newlyformed Geraldine Ladies’ Club was played. After enjoyable games and afternoon tea Mrs Davis thanked the hostesses for their hospitality and in reply Mrs Brown, president of the Geraldine Club, thanked Temuka for the visit and accepted an invitation to play a return match at Temuka on March 15. The game resulted in a win for Geraldine, the scores (Geraldine names first) being: Mesdames Sutherland, Lewis, Russell and A. G. Brown (s) 14 drew with Mrs Martin, Miss Hanifin and Mesdames Robins and Earl (s) 14; Mrs Bryant, Miss Roberts and Mesdames Burmester and Firman (s) beat Mesdames Bussell, Taylor, Clinch and Johnston (s). In the Temuka Club’s championship pairs competition results yesterday were: Mesdames Blackmore and Fletcher (s) beat Mesdames Taylor and Shand (s), Mesdames Robins and Cooper (s), lost to Mrs Martin and Miss McGarva (s), Mesdames Bussell and Davis (s) beat Mesdames Johnston and Winter (s), and Miss Ellis and Mrs Harbrow (s) lost to Mesdames Shiel and Palmer (s). DRUIDS LODGE. At the fortnightly meeting of the Lily of Temuka Druids Lodge, A.D. Bro. W. Mclnnes presided. P.A. Bro. Pierce reported on the annual meeting of the United Friendly Societies Council. The Arch. Druid reported on a visit to Ashburton to attend the installation of the District President. P.D.P. W. Ross and P.A. Bro. Pierce were appointed elegates to the Friendly Fridays Committee. It was decided to support the

suggestion of the Odfellows Lodge that a combined team play the Temuka Cricket Club’s Thursday team next Thursday. Secretary J. Denison was appointed selector. GENERAL NEWS. In connection with the erection of the swings and see-saws at the East Side children’s playground, which commenced yesterday, the Borough Resc ves Committee, comprising Crs W. 11. McMillan, P. H. Lynch and I. W. T. Baxter, together with the Mayor, visited the site on Tuesday evening. It was decided to have the swings placed at the east end of the reserve to allow r..i area sufficiently large for cricket and similar games, the committee having in view the laying of an asphalt court fo~ basketball. The Temuka Girl Guides and Brownies are to be represented at the rally in Christchurch to Sir Robert and Lady Baden-Powell on Saturday, it having been arranged that a party should travel by the special train for the meeting. “EVERGREEN.” The Dominion Theatre at Temuka *s ■vt present undergoing extensive renovations and will re-open on Saturday, March 9, with a spectacular musical comedy “Evergreen,” starring Jessie Matthews and an all British cast.
