HELP FROM RELIEF DEPOT
To the Editor of “ The Timaru Herald ” Sir, —In reply to the outbursts of “Unemployed” of alleged misleading statements of Mr Koller’s at the last meeting of the Timaru Unemployment Committee, I cannot, owing to the absence of Mr Koller from Timaru allow such an implied slur on the veracity of his statement to go unchallenged. Now being in the position to know authentically I shall begin by asking “Unemployed,” if he ever had a pair of working boots repaired at the depot. If sc, did such repairs cost him anything? If not, then he, at the outset of his letter, does that which he accuses Mr Koller of doing. Anyhow Mr Koller in his statement never implied that rations were issued free of cost. Now after perusing the list of goods purchased by “Unemployed,” I discover he has omitted the following goods: Meat, flour, rice, sago, oatmeal, golden syrup, which constitutes, with the items detailed by “Unemployed,” the maximum ration available to relief workers from the depot. I wish to emphasise that the figures quoted by Mr Koller were based on the maximum ration available per week, and therefore there is no comparison between the list submitted by “Unemployed” and the statement made by Mr Koller. However Mr Editor, I shall endeavour to satisfy “Unemployed” regarding his request for
Mr Koller to ascertain the price of the goods at any cash store, and show the saving to “Unemployed” by purchasing at the Depot. The following quantities and prices are based on a four-weekly period and are available to a Class C man with two children. Retail
Your readers, Mr Editor, will now see that “Unemployed” has effected a saving of £l/0/5 for a four week period or 5/li per week, and yet he has not purchased the maximum amount of goods available to him. I should in conclusion, like to point out to “Unemployed” his arithmetical error. To his groceries which he states for five weeks amount to 19/4 should be added three sacks of coal at 3/ —9/-, 2 sacks wood at 1/ —2/-, bringing his total purchases from the Depot up to £l/10/4 not £l/13/4 as stated in his letter.—l am, etc., F. A. HILTON. Honorary Secretary Timaru Unemployed Workers’ Union. Timaru, February 7.
