WAIPAPA BEACH DREDGING COY. The launching of the pontoons of the new dredge was successfully carried out on Monday. Within a few hundred yards of where the new dredge was launched are the remains of the Wellman suction dredge which won 1000 ounces of gold in 1890. This was one of the earliest attempts at gold dredging in Otago. The pontoons are 50ft. long and were constructed in Invercargill on behalf of the Dunedin Engineering and Steel Coy., the contractors for the dredge. The launching took place without a hitch in the presence of a number of share holders and local residents. The dredge is of the modem Diesel bucket dredge type and is specially designed to operate on beach sand deposits. It is expected to be at work about the end of April.
