NEWS AND NOTES

On Tuesday New Zealand butter reached the price of 94s a cwt. on the London market, the highest since November, 1933. On Wednesday the quotation had eased to 925, Monday’s price, which caused the local retail price to be raised by Id a pound. The opinion was —pressed yesterday that with drought affecting the New Zealand output, there was a prospect of the price hardening. It was conceivable that the 100 s mark might be reached.

The suggestion has been made by the Minister of Education, Mr S. G. Smith, that since Anzac Day falls on the Thursday of Easter week, primary schools should close also on Wednesday, April 24, and Friday 26. This would give the pupils a holiday extending from Thursday, April 18, to Monday, April 29, instead of only Good Friday (April 19), Easter Monday and Tuesday, and Anzac Day. The Minister suggests that, if necessary, compensation could be taken from the thre days and six half-days allocated to school committees for special holidays each year.

The world wags and we must move with it is Thomsons’ philosophy. What our grandparents would have ignored we have to tackle and bring it into a shapely becoming article. That reminds! The council of the Chamber of Commerce this week voted £IOO to the Economics Department of Canterbury College as a contribution towards the cost, during the year, or the economic bulletins issued by the department in conjunction with the chamber. The bulletins have been issued regularly for the past ten years and, on the motion of Mr. W. Machin, chairman of the Economics Committee, the thanks of the chamber were accorded to the College Council, the Rector (Dr. J. Hight) and the head of the Economics Department (Professor A. H. Tocker) for their co-operation. In supporting the grant and the motion of thanks, the president (Mr. F. W. Hobbs) said that when Dr. J. B. Condliffe, of the League of Nations staff, was in Christchurch recently, he was asked whether there was any real value in the chamber’s economic bulletins and the reply was to the effect that not only were they looked upon as valuable at Geneva, but they were taken as standard works on New Zealand conditions wherever economic experts assembled.

Whether on account of the exceptionally dry season having caused depressions and drains that are normally flushed with rain at frequent intervals to become stagnant, or for some other reason, mosquitoes have been unusually plentiful, as well as unusually large, in Auckland this year (states the New Zealand Herald). Their attacks have been worse this season than for many year. In many eases the number of the pests could be largely reduced by householders, and it is not so much an unkind fate as their own neglect of precautions that has led to the prevalence of the insects. Mosquitoes do not move far from their breeding grounds as a general rule, so that the application of oil or kerosene to depressions where water gathers and to roof spoutings, drains, and hollows in logs and trees, the clearing of sluggish creeks and water courses, and the removal of old tins, will, by the destruction of their breeding grounds, do much to clear the locality of the insects. In a season like the present, when, owing to the shortage of rain, one application of oil will last for a considerable period, it is the duty of all householders to take these elementary precautions in the interests of their neighbours as well as their own. Officers of the Health Department consider that the chief breedSlg places for mosquitoes in Auckland this year have been gully traps and catch pits in the streets, which have not been flushed out by rain as frequently as usual. The City Council and some of the other local bodies have been attending to these danger points by flushing and the application of oil, and it is urged that authorities in all suburban districts should adopt similar measures in an endeavour to reduce the annoyance from the insects.
