JANUARY WEATHER SUMMARY The weather conditions at Peel Forest during the month of January were remarkable for the number of light showers, long periods of moderate nor’-west winds and parching heat. Rain fell on 16 days for a total of 4.62 inches, the maximum fall being 96 points on January 3. Other recordings over 10 points were—January 1, 17 points; January 2, 87 points; January 4, 20 points; January 7, 16 points; January 18, 78 points; January 19, 41 points; January 21, 32 points; January 27, 37 points; total 4.62 inches, as compared with 8.78 inches last year, and 5.78 in 1933. Exceptionally hot, dry weather has been experienced during the last week. Although the vegetation near the hills is still green, the soil is very dry and baked hard with the intense heat and dry winds. A good soaking rain is urgently needed. Owing to the prevailing nqr-westry conditions up country the Rangitata river has been either in flood or discoloured ever since the New Year, with a result that anglers had little fishing over the holidays.
