KILLED BY THIEVES

FATE OF JEWELLERS’ NIGHT CARETAKER BIG HAUL OF DIAMONDS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received February 6, 8.25 p.m.) PERTH, February 5. The body of Edgar Whitfield, about sixty years of age, a night caretaker employed at Caris Brothers, jewellers, Hay Street, Perth, was found last night in the rear of the shop with his neck broken and diamonds valued at £4OOO or £SOOO missing from the safe. Whitfield was seen last night about 10 o’clock transferring the diamonds from the window to the safe in accordance with his usual custom. Later the police received a telephone message from an unknown man saying he had heard a crash of glass within the shop. Their examination revealed Whitfield’s body. There is evidence of theft, and the police are of opinion that Whitfield’s neck was broken during a violent struggle with burglars.
