HINT OF REVIVAL OF MIGRATION
FEDERAL MINISTER’S FORECAST MR MACDONALD’S REPORT AWAITED United Pi ess Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright MELBOURNE. January 22. The Federal Attorney-General (Hon. P. G. Menzies) hinted alt the possibility of the revival of migration being made on a basis of negotiations between Australia and Britain, when the question of meat and other exports is discussed. Mr Menzies said that England is finding that she has too much population. “We must agree that Australia’s population is too small for the Commonwealth of the future. Immigration and trade must not be regarded as day bo day matters.” CABINET ENVOY HOMEWARD BOUND
AWAITING REPORTS FROM OVERSEAS United Press Association—B.v Electric Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, January 21. Mr Malcolm Macdonald (Undersecretary for Dominion Affairs) is returning by the Rangitane to-morrow, shortly after which there will be a conference at the Dominion’s Office in connection with migration and Dominions affairs. Chief interest centres on migration, following Mr Chamberlain’s speech of January 1, in which he said that although emigration was unlikely to reach the previous level, no doubt the demand to settle men in new areas in the Dominions would be revived. The Goverment eagerly awaits the observations of the Dominions and Colonies on the Committee’s report. Mr Malcolm Macdonald will report to the Government the Australian and New Zealand attitude.
