GANDHI’S VILLAGE PLAN
PRODUCES POLITICAL CRISIS GOVERNMENT’S ATTITUDE DEFENDED United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received January 22, 8.15 p.m.) DELHI, January 22. Forty-three newly elected members of the Congress entered the Legislative Assembly and occupied the Opposition benches at the opening of the session. They immediately challenged the Government by moving an adjournment, when Mr Satyamurti attacked a letter from the Home Department, which was addressed to the Provincial Governments disclosing speculations regarding the political potentialities of the Mahatma Gandhi's Village Industries’ Association.
Sir Henry Craik, defending the Department, said the letters were tentative, and did not contain orders and were confidential. Nevertheless they had been published in extremist newspapers, having been either stolen or sold. Sir Henry quoted speeches oy members of Congress to support the Government’s contention that the As • sociation aimed at revolution through the villages. He addsd tfca* if developments showed that this fear waj baseless he would be willing to cooperate in Mr Gandhi’s work The House cheered the statement and talked out the motion. Contrary to the previous announcement, the Maharajah of Patiala accepted the Chancellorship of the Chamber of Princes, and in view of the proposed reforms and reorganisations in the Chamber, the Maharajah of Bikanir agree to to become a committeeman.
