Mr W. W. Smail (Auckland) is staying at the Empire.

Mr C. Cuddie (Dunedin) is visitihg Timaru and is at the Dominion. Dr. R. Fulton, Dunedin, who is on a visit to Timaru, will leave to-morrow for Mt. John, Tekapo, Messrs J, Somerville (Dunedin), J. Clark (Dunedin) and G. Jarman (Wellington) are at the Empire. Guests at the Grosvenor include Messrs H. O. Turner (Christchurch), W. Cox (Wellington) and J. F. Riches (Wellington). A visitor by the Remuera is Mr H. G. Courtney, a prominent alpinist, who intends to tackle some of New Zealand’s peaks. going first to the Mount Cook district.

Subject to the approval of the Minister, the new medical superintendent of the Palmerston North Public Hospital will be Dr. J. H. North, resident surgical officer and tutor at the Dunedin Hospital. Mr G. F. Smythe. manager of the Timaru branch of the A.M.P. Society, who leaves to-morrow with Mrs Smythe and the Misses Diana and Kathleen Smythe, on a visit to England, was met by the staff of the branch, yesterday and presented with a travelling rug and a case of pipes as a mark of their goodwill. The presentation was made by Mr K. G. Thomson (superintendent), who referred to the cordial relations that had always existed between Mr Smythe and the staff, and wished Mr Smythe and members of his family a pleasant holiday. Similar sentiments were expressed by Mr W. Bird. Mr Smythe acknowledging the gifts and the good wishes. Opportunity was taken also to welcome Mr I. McHardy, of Wellington, who will act as relieving manager during Mr Smythe’s absence for 12 months.
