GENERAL NEWS

Strange Companion. “Knights of the Road” are to be seen in many parts of South Canterbury at the present time, but motorists driving towards Timaru from the north on Saturday were surprised to see a “swagger” led by a goat. The animal trotted along quite cheerfully with the owner holding the leash a few yards behind. Rotarians Honoured. At the weekly luncheon of the Timaru Rotary Club yesterday, the president (Mr F. I. Washbourn) referred to the fact that three rotarians, Sir Clutha Mackenzie, Sir Percy Sargood and Mr H. H. Sterling had been included in the New Year honours, and at his suggestion the club decided to extend congratulations to the rotarians mentioned. Several Chamois Seen. Mr W. M. Cotterell, who was climbing recently near the Rakaia and Waimakariri Gorges, told a representative of '‘The Timaru Herald” yesterday that while on his travels in that locality he saw several chamois. Mr Cotterell recommended Mt. Hutt <7lßoft) as a good one-day trip for amateur climbers. Cars could be taken to the foot above Rakaia Gorge and visitors could commence the ascent on a spur which led direct to the summit. Tdbacco “Sale.” Advertisements inserted last Friday in Timaru, Oamaru and Invercargill newspapers offering tobacco and cigarettes from a liquidation stock in Dunedin at very low prices, aroused the suspicions of the Dunedin police, especially as similar advertisements did not appear in the Dunedin papers. It is understood that the advertisements brought forth a large number of orders, but that as. yet none of these has been fulfilled. The Dunedin police have detained a man in connection with the matter. Heavy Rain. Heavy rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, was experienced in Timaru yesterday afternoon. The storm blew up from the south shortly before 2 o’clock, and once the rain commenced, it came down heavily, and did not ease off until late in the afternoon. The indications then were that conditions would clear, but before 7 o’clock last night and later, further heavy rain fell. So heavy was the downpour that some of the water channels became blocked, and members of the Borough Council staff were obliged to clear the debris so as to let the water away. The championship swimming carnival was also interrupted, the handicap events having to be postponed.
