TOWN AND COUNTRY ITEMS OAMARU, January 21. Naval Training: H.M.S. Wakakura, which has returned to Oamaru with naval trainees to-day carried out one-inch gun practice and to-morrow at 11 a.m. will join the sloop Leith, which is coming from Lyttelton, in mine-sweeping practice off Pukeuri Point. On completion of this, the Wakakura will engage in four-inch gun-firing. The remainder of the programme will comprise boat and seamanship training, and the Wakakura will leave for Dunedin on Thursday. The officers and men will hold a dance on Wednesday night. Bound for Camp: At 7 o’clock this morning the Oamaru railway station bore a busier appearance than usual when the Regimental Band entrained for Outram where the Mounted Rifles Camp is being held for the second year >n succession. The band and troopers from Upper Waitaki will be under canvass for nine days. This is the first mounted camp of recent years to be held in the summer, these training periods usually being held in April or May. Country Tennis: The Waitaki Sub-association’s annual lawn tennis tournament was continued on Saturday in good conditions, when most of the championship events were concluded. In the Men’s Single Championship L. M‘Kinnon gained a meritorious and somewhat surprising win over S. G. M‘Dougall in the final of an interesting match. The Men’s Doubles Championship went to S. G. M'Dougall and j. Familton, who played well throughout the event. Most of the other events will be concluded during the week. The tournament was a very enjoyable and successful one and the sub-asso-ciation is to be congratulated on the manner in which it was conducted. Cycle Road Race: A cycle road race under the auspices of the Oamaru Athletic and Cycling Club, was held from Oamaru to Awamoko and back, a total distance of 30 miles. The weather was fine, and conditions were fairly ideal for the race. Sixteen cyclists faced the starter, and the limit men left from the north end of the avenue of trees shortly after 6 o’clock. The race was very keenly contested, and all the cyclists rode well, there being only four minutes separating the first and last men. L. Todd, of Oamaru, proved the winner, with H. H. Nicholson, of Richmond, second, both riding off minutes. J. Cremin, of Timaru, gained fastest time from scratch, doing the distance in lhr 25min 57 2-ssec. R. Barnes (Oamaru), also riding off scratch, gained second fastest time. The race proved one of the best held by the club, and little separated the competitors. The arrangements were well in hand, and the officials are to be congratulated on their efforts to cater for the cyclists. Golf.. A Stableford Match was played at the Awamoa links in fine weather, the winner being E. Dalton. In this match the handicap is added, so that the results are as follows:—Dalton, 32 —4—36; Holmes, 28—7—35; M‘Dowell, 22—13—35; M'Beath, 26—5—31; Patterson, 13—18—31; Milnes, 23—8—31; Catto, 21—9—30; M‘Ewan, 23—7—30; Kilpatrick, 26—4—30; Munro, 11—18— 29; Restieaux, 11—18—29; T. Hedges, 11—16—27; Burton, 9—18—27; Banks, 11—14—25; M‘Kenzie, 16—7—23.
