NEW BUILDINGS

LARGE INCREASE IN TIMARU LAST YEAR’S FIGURES There was greater activity in the building trade in Timaru last year than had been the case for some time, and the value of the structures erected was £45,197 greater than the figures for 1933. The total value of buildings erected last year was £75,944 compared with £30,747 in the previous year, an increase of nearly 150 per cent. There was a great boom in building in September, October and November, owing largely to the introduction of the Unemployment Board's subsidy, and in those three months buildings valued at £36,466 were undertaken, the figures for the corresponding months in 1933 being only £13.973. ' There was a large increase in the number of permits issued, 80 new houses being erected against 31 the previous year. The only department which did not show an increase was the erection of shops, only two being built last year compared with four in 1933.

The building trade should receive a decided fillip this year by improvements and new structures to be erected. The proposed new buildings will probably include the Bank of Australasia on the corner of Beswick and Stafford Streets, the hospital block, if sanctioned, estimated at approximately £IB,OOO, and the reconstruction of the interior of the Windsor Hotel, at the corner of George Street and Cain’s Terrace, which is to be converted into offices. The detailed figures of building activity during the past two years is as follows: Permits Issued. Value. 1933. 1934. 1933. 1934. £ £
