Monti, the centre half of the Italian football team that recently visited England, is the highest paid footballer in the world. He was once an Argentine player, and receives £l5O a month for a playing year of ten months.

It is a misnomer now to talk of bowling “greens”—the areas are so baked by the hot sun of late that the grass swards are absolutely brown and, t-o all appearances, dead, says the Manawatu “Times”. Bowlers with years of experience at Palmerston North state that for many years past they have not seen the greens so dried up at such a season of the year.

A motor cyclist on the New Plymouth side of Mount Messenger the other day owed his life to a tree which held him suspended 200 ft to 300 ft above a precipice. He and his machine had run over the side of the road and fallen 20 or 30ft before being succoured by the friendly trunk. Otherwise there would have been a crash to inevitable destruction in the valley far below. Passing motorists who rescued the rider and his machine from the predicament were amazed to find the man not seriously hurt and the cycle not badly damaged.

A party of men who have been working in Ship Cove. Queen Charlotte Sound, lately noticed that the wekas which used to be so common round the camping ground have almost completely vanished, their place having been taken by weasels, of which the men saw three. Other native birds abound, but the weasels seem to have made a job of the ground dwellers.

The British Post Office carried more than 150,000,000 parcels last year, 67 tons of them being sent by air.

Passengers by a car to Aramoho leaving Wanganui with a full load on a recent evening had an exciting experience. One of the overhead wires broke, the resultant noise causing some of the passengers to think that the car had been struck by lightning. Women screamed, children cried, and there was a general scramble to get out of the car. This was wisely prevented by the conductor and the attendant inspector, who at once realised the danger of live wires, which could be seen burning the dry grass on which they had fallen. Later, when the wires were removed, a number of passengers alighted and proceeded to walk. Traffic was interrupted for half an hour until repairs were effected.
