DIAMOND SUPERSTITIONS

EASTERN BELIEFS Diamonds are supposed to be more powerful than all other stones in their influence against evil. But if this power is to be at its greatest, the jewel should be worn on the left side. This belief still exists because so many diamond rings are worn on the left hand—also the stone is nearly always given a clear setting, because its power is greatest when touching the skin. Diamonds that are stolen or obtained in a wrong manner are supposed to be bringers of bad luck. There are stories connected with most of the famous diamonds in the world—the Koh-i-Noor, the Hope Diamond, and the famous Russian diamond which belonged to the Russian Royal Family. In Eastern countries it is said that diamonds should never be worn as buttons by women. The name diamond means invincible, because of the extreme hardness of the substance. So hard is it that it has to be cut and polished with special tools set with diamonds. The modern cutting is called “baguette”—a rectangular shape. Victorian women wore their diamonds in “brilliant” cutting—that is, with a large number of facets.
