TEACHER RETIRES

GIFTS FROM COLLEAGUES AND PUPILS

Yesterday morning the staff of the Timaru West School said farewell to Mr George Calder and Mrs Calder, when Mr Romans presented the guest with a set of crystal glassware. Mr Romans said it was with mixed feelings that he performed such an important duty. Mr Calder had now reached the time when he could lay aside the reins and enjoy the pleasures of well-earned leisure hours. The school would not seem the same when they assembled next year, but Mr Calder should not feel too sad because he would still be near the school that was so dear to him, and they would expect to see him with them on many future occasions. He sincerely hoped that their future would be happy, and that health would bless their path. The gift carried with it the loving wishes of each member of the staff. Mr Calder said that it did not need such a wonderful present to remind him of the fcappy days he had spent in the West School. He would always remember the great help he had received from one and all. The high traditions of the school would be worthily upheld under the able leadership of their present head, Mr Romans. He thanked them all and wished them a happy holiday. Just before the close of the morning session Miss Alice Dennison, on behalf of Forms I and 11, presented Air Calder with a Rolls razor set, and wished him a happy time in the years ahead. The gift carried best wishes and appreciation of all Mr Calder had done for them

Mr Calder thanked the pupils for their present, and said that though they at times were not always praised by him, it was a happy time he had spent with them, and he felt the leaving of his own pupils and those he had last year more than anything else. He asked them to remember the following four points: Loyalty to their school, teachers and country; discipline over their tongues and actions; sportsmanship. always to play the game in whatever they had to do whether it was work or play; and above work for its own sake and not for the hope of reward. Those principles had guided him. and if the boys and girls acted on them they would have nothing to fear in the future. Mr Romans told the prefects that they could take charge. Three cheers were given for Mr Calder and for Mr Romans and each member of his staff.
