RIFLE SHOOTING

TIMARU DEFENCE CLUB

VOLUNTEER CUP On Saturday the Timaru Defence Rifle Club fired the ninth match of the season. The conditions were seven shots at 300, 500 and 600 yards. The visibility was not by any means good. The weather was very dull wit:.* a tricky wind off the sea, and at 600 a drizzle set in, making shooting difficult. This shoot counted for a lot. In addition to the club trophies and the championship, it counted for the Old Volunteer Cup, also the ex-Volunteers prizes, and in addition to these there was a match between the old Volunteers and three teams from the Defence Rifle Club. The teams were eight men a side at 300. The top scores were made by J. Beckingham f the old Volunteers, and J. Hull and J. Green of the T.D.R.C., all with 33. At SCO J. D. Robertson of the Old Volunteers, W. Malcolm, H. Hopkins, T.D.R.C., each made 33. At 6QO W. Duncan and I. Finlay made 33. The club trophies were won by W. Duncan with 101, 1; F. B. Knight with 100. 2; and I. C. Finlay 3. The Gold Rifle was won by W. Duncan with 96 off the rifle. H. Hopkins was second. The Old Volunteer Cun and miniature were won by W. Duncan for the second time out of four shoots. H. Hopkins was second with 95. W. Duncan and H. Hopkins collected the prizes donated by the Old Volunteers for the day’s shoot. During the afternoon the Defence men put on afternoon tea for the visitors. At the conclusion of the shoot Mr W. Duncan, president of the Timaru Defence Rifle Club, extended on behalf of the club, a hearty welcome to the visitors. He said it gave them great pleasure to have the old riflemen present, especially as some of them had been shooting for half a century and more. He called for cheers for the Old Volunteers. Major A. Boys suitably replied on behalf of the Old Voluntters and called for cheers for the home teams. At this stage Mr Duncan said he had a very pleasing duty perform—to present a cup to the Old Volunteer with the highest score for the day, and called on Major Boys to come forward and receive the cup he Uad won with 91 eff the rifle. In returning thanks Major Boys congratulated President W. Duncan in winning the Old Volunteer Cup for the second time. At a meeting 'reld on the range it was decided to hold a match next Saturday over ranges 300, 500 and 600 yards. The following are the scores for the day:—
