Bowling: The first matches in the Mills Shield competition this season were played on [ Saturday afternoon, Phoenix winning two sections against Meadowbank and the section against Pukeuri, and ; Meadowbank winning two sections ; against Phoenix. The competition points are. therefore, as follows: Phoenix 30, Meadowbank 10, Pukeuri nil. The Phoenix-Pukeuri match provided a very exciting contest, with : the issue in doubt until the last head. j First Call: [ The Union Steamship’s new cargo , steamer, Waitaki, ts due to make her [ first call here to-morrow week. The . Waitaki will replace the Wainui on the , Melbourne service, but due to the fact , that the Maheno has been allocated that service until March, the Waitaki ! has been transferred temporarily to ( the East Coast of New Zealand coastal i service. The Waitaki is 270 feet long. • 42 feet 6 inches wide, and 23 feet deep. Her gross tonnage is 2211.94, and nett tonnage 1097.89. Condition of Rivers: : There was a good run of whitebait ■ in the Kakanui River over the week- : end, and several fishermen obtained ; good hauls. No angling reports have come to hand. The Waitaki River dur- ; ing the week-end was in the pink of ; condition, and several local men met ; with fair success, though few particu- ■ lars have yet been reported. E. McCabe landed a nice five-pounder, and ■ J. Henderson took two fair-sized trout. ; Unemployment Committee: At the weekly meeting of the Oamaru Unemployment, Committee this morning, the Mayor (Mr M. F. E. 1 Cooney) presided. Several applica- ; tions for unemployed labour were received, but none were granted in the ; meantime. The Certifying Officer (Mr J. G. Adair) reported that 443 men ; were registered as unemployed at the ’ end of the previous week since when 21 new applications had been placed in private employment, and three named had been removed, leaving a i balance of 451 men registered at the 1 end of last week. Cricket Competition: Great interest was taken in the ! meeting between Union and Oamaru ; in the North Otago Cricket Association’s senior competition, as these two teams are leading. Union made ] 98 in the first innings (Brown 38, Mc- , Donald 17, Meikle 12). For Oamaru . Inder took two wickets for 25 runs; Hendra three for 33, Sutton one for 18, and Zimmermann two for two. Oamaru made 116 for eight wickets ; (Uttley 23, Zimmermann 15, Dick 14. Jones 27). The match will be con- > tinued next Saturday. Playing against Albion Waitaki : High School made 98 in the fist innings (Kerr 16. Capstick 13. Gowland : 14, Halloway 18, Wilson 17). Davey ■ took five wickets for 34, Frith four for 17. Albion made 145 for seven wickets (Brooker 15, Moore 29, Davey 53, Geddes 16).
