CYCLING
TIMARU CLUB’S ROAD RACE The Timaru Cycling Club held a 20mile road race on Saturday afternoon from Washdyke round the Seadown block twice. Thirty-one of the handicapped riders faced the starter, this being the best field the club has had for a considerable time. Fifteen of the competitors were up in the first bunch and finished within a few yards of each other. E. Allen and C. Clarke from 3J minutes just caught the leaders at the railway crossing 200 yards from the finish and gained first and third place respectively There was a great deal of shuffling in the straight with so many together and Allan was blamed for bumping another rider, but had apparently lost his balance through receiving a bump from another competitor. I. Rawson was second, he having been placed in the three races held this season. He is only 16 and promises to be a consistent performer. P. Beswarick and J. Spillane, the midgets of the field, were both in the bunch at the finish, and a place for either of them would have been very popular. Peebles, who paced the leaders for most of the journey was unfortunate to get only fourth place. Allan, in addition to securing first, also gained fastest time, 50min 22sec. The scratch riders, Willmott and Cremin, could have secured fastest time had they ridden the race out. It will be interesting to see all the riders flat out in the club’s big championship race in three weeks’ time. The placings in Saturday’s race were:— E. Allan (Peel Forest), 34min,. 50min 22sec .. .. . 1 I. Rawson (Glen-iti), 4imin, 51min 52 l-ssec 2 C. Clarke (Ashburton), 34min, 50min 22 2-ssec 3 E. Allan and C. Clarke secured fastest and second fastest times respectively.
