FURNISHING NOVELTIES
Now that the beauty and hardwearing qualities of reptile skins have been discovered by the dress designers and shoemakers, the furniture people are casting eyes at them. Various experiments are being made. One of the most successful of these consists of stretching snake and lizard skins over the wood, after the manner of veneer. The skins are then lacquered. Some table tops have the skins arranged in patterns, like marquetry. Their lovely undyed markings contrast effectively with the natural grain of the wood. Sheepskins are also being pressed into use as upholstery for chairs and settees. A new idea is a three-in-one piece of furniture. The two-end sections have upholstered backs and sides, while the centre one is backless. Placed together, they make a comfortable settee and apart they are useful as two lounge chairs and a stool. Clipped sheepskin upholstery provides a further novelty.
