PREMATURE EXPLOSION
QUARRY FOREMAN FATALLY INJURED CHRISTCHURCH, November 15. Two men were injured, one fatally when a premature explosion occurred at the Halswell quarries this morning. John Quill, the quarry foreman, was struck by falling rock, and was admitted to hospital suffering from severe injuries to his face and chest, from which he died in the afternoon. The other man. G. Edwards, was struck on the leg by flying rock. He also was sent to hospital. The accident happened at 11 o'clock, when the men were preparing a charge. Quill was standing on a pile of loose stone and was loading the shot in a hole 12 feet up the face. Quill was tamping the shot in when it exploded. The vibration brought down six tons of rock, most of which fell about Quill. Edwards was struck by flying rock. Quill was half buried under the rock. Quill, who was a middle-aged man, was a widower with a grown-up family.
