ACCIDENT SEQUEL
TRUCK DRIVER CHARGED Following an accident the previous afternoon as a result of which Mrs Esther Josephine Rooney died in the Timaru Public Hospital, Preston George Stevens (Mr L. M. Inglis) appeared before Mr .C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M.. in the Timaru Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged that on November 14 he was found in a state of intoxication in charge of a motor truck. Senior-Sergeant Mathieson said that the woman concerned in the accident had died, and a more serious charge would be preferred after the police had completed their investigations. He anplied for a remand until November Mr Inglis asked for bail. The police raised no objection to this. Senior-Sergeant Mathieson stating that the accused was well-known. The Magistrate granted the remand, bail being allowed in self £SO and one surety of £SO, a condition being that Stevens reported daily to the police. Inquest Opened Evidence of identification was taken by the Coroner (Mr C. R. Orr-Walker) at an inquest on the victim of the accident. Constable W. J. Watt, who identified the body, said that Mrs Rooney’s age was about 65. She was up to the time of her death in good health, while her sight and hearing were good. She was a very active woman. The inquest was adjourned sine die. SEQUEL TO FAREWELL TO HOCKEY PLAYERS There is one young Christchurch man who still has reason to remember the farewell to the North Island Ladies’ Hockey Teams from Lyttelton.
