APPEAL FOR CO-OPERATION
To the Editor of “ The Timaru Herald ” Sir, —Kindly allow me space to discuss the comments on the proposed band contests. What a pity education has not taught people not to criticise and make such slurs on other people’s ideals. It must be very hurtful to the people who admire the bagpipes; such comments. I consider show ignorance. We, like most of the Scotch people, love our bands, but what is wrong with the whole world is that it is suffering from selfishness. We want things too much our own way. If people would only co-operate, and try to admire other people’s ideals, this lonely old world would be a far better place. Yes, I agree, it would perhaps have been better to have postponed the pipe band contest, until a later date. Decent thinking people and lovers of music will no doubt visit Timaru, to hear all the bands, so let us also remember that as our bands appeal to us, so the pipe band should and does appeal to the Scotch people. It is their national music, and they are proud of it, and were it not enjoyed, there would not be the fine bands there are to-day. I think people are very disloyal to criticise as they do. One writer says they are going to have the pipe band. Yes, admitted. But he would have had no say, if our Mayor had ruled otherwise. We must even give our Mayor his due for trying to please all tastes. So we will still hope for more co-operation and unity, and we can but hope that Timaru shopkeepers, and the band contests, Scotch and otherwise, will meet with every success. I am sure these will be the wishes of every decent thinking citizen and there will be fair play to all.—l am, etc., LOVER OF MUSIC. Timaru, November 14.
