Tasman Yacht Race. The auxiliary yacht Queen Charlotte has withdrawn from the Tasman yacht • race, Auckland to Melbourne next month. Proficiency Examinations The annual proficiency examinations will be held in Timaru primary schools as follows:—December 4, South. Main, Convent and Waimataitai; December 5. West, Marist and Technical High School. Missing - Boy Found William James Hanson, aged 15. who has been missing from his home In Wellington since last Thursday, was discovered yesterday on a farm several miles from Levin where he had obtained employment. Civil Claim. Judgment for plaintiff by default was entered by Mr C. R. Orr-Walker. S.M., yesterday in a case in which the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. Ltd. proceeded against Alfred Williams for £l/4/-, costs being allowed at 8/-. Opportunity in Education ‘The children of to-day have a chance which we certainly did not. have, and if they cannot make good under the conditions—well they cannot blame the teachers or the system, they have only themselves to blame,” remarked Mr J. W. Preen at a meeting of the Board of Managers of the Timaru Technical College last night, when referring to the work which was being done at the College. Farm Labourer Arrested. A young farm labourer was arrested in Timaru yesterday by Detective L. Studholme and Constable S. J. Anderson, on a charge of having stolen £4 from the garage of Mr James Daly. Hassall Street. It is stated that the theft occurred on October 26. Accused. who will appear in the Magistrate’s Court this morning, will also be charged with a breach of his probation order. Attacked by Stallion A rather serious accident befel Mr Charles Vincent, of Feilding, when leading a stallion this week. Without warning the animal attacked Vincent, who was riding another horse, biting him severely on the knee and causing him to fall to the ground, where the stallion commenced to kick him. He was rescued from his plight by passersby and a doctor was sent for. His condition is reported to be satisfactory. The Price of Fame To be celebrated is to incur many penalties. In the pig pens at the Waikato Show there was one huge animal, a sow. It filled one pen. and wanted to overflow into the adjoining one. It grunted disgustedly, and wheezed, and in the hot pavilion it possessed the unmistakable piggy smell. Due care had been given to the choice of its name. It had to be aristocratic, like the pig. a princess among her kind. The owner had called the pride of his heart “Marina.” Rotary Visitor Mr J. M. A. Ilott. of Wellington. District Governor of Rotary in New Zealand. met members of the Timaru Rotary Club at a gathering last night and discussed arrangements for the forthcoming Dominion conference of Rotary which will be held in Timaru towards the end of February next year. Mr Ilott gave an interesting talk on his recent visit to England. America and the Continent, with special reference to the activities of Rotary. Mr Ilott was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Threshing Mills Dispte The North Canterbury (American type) threshing mills dispute was discussed in a Conciliation Council at Christchurch yesterday. The rates of pay and payment for shifting time were the only points argued. The employers refused to advance their previous offer of 1/9 an hour and refused payment for shifting time. The employees reduced their wages demand from 2/0* to 1/10 an hour, but asked also for payment for shifting time. It was agreed after a long discussion to adjourn the sitting until November 26, and in the meantime the employers’ representatives agreed to consult with the mill owners. Farmers’ Dispute. For the greater part of yesterday Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., was engaged hearing a dispute between two farmers from Sutherlands, involving a total amount of £2O/1/-. Plaintiff in the action was John William Tooley (Mr J. Steven), who sought to recover from David Annett (Mr L. Hudson) a binder platform canvas which it was alleged was detained by defendant, or alternative! £2/5/-. An amount of £l7/16/also was claimed, as the value of turnip feed supplied at the request of defendant for 356 sheep at twopence a head for a period of six weeks in August or September, 1932. After the evidence of numerous witnesses had been heard, the Magistrate entered judgment for defendant with costs £7/4/6. Tumultuous Reception. A tumultuous reception was accorded Squadron-Leader M. C. McGregor and Mr H. C. Walker on their arrival at Palmerston North yesterday, escorted by 14 aeroplanes. Nearing the Milson Aerodrome, the Miles Hawk outpaced the escort to zoom down out of the sky at 175 miles an hour till it was only 100 feet over the heads of the cheering multitude. The Milson Aerodrome had never witnessed such scenes before nor such a large crowd. The Hon. J. G. Cobbe, who was among those who welcomed the aviators, stated that it was a red letter day in the history of aviation in New Zealand. The fact that they were fifth in the race bespoke skill and courage deserving the highest commendation. The pilot could be said to occupy in New Zealand aviation a position similar to that of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith in Australia.
