GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL

SPORTS DAY A red-letter day, and one eagerly looked forward to by all school girls is the one on which the sports are held, consequently on Saturday afternoon when the annual sports of the Timaru Girls’ High School took place, a very large number of parents, old girls and friends gathered at the school grounds to watch the sports and view an exhibition of hand-work. The weather was gloriously fine, and hundreds of parents who visited the school must have felt they owed a deep debt of gratitude to Miss J. R. Barr, principal, and members of her staff for their devotion and earnestness in the work of education. During the afternoon a display of Swedish drill and folk dancing was given by the pupils under the sports-mistress. Miss Lee, and this display, perfect in every detail, earned the appreciation and applause of the spectators. The hand-work, displayed in the class-rooms showed talent and originality, and delectable cooking exhibits, arranged on tables decorated with marigolds, showed that the puoils had been taught domesticity as well as the arts. The Timaru Boys’ High School Band, helped in the entertainment of those present with their music, and afternoon tea, served under shady trees, was much appreciated on such a hot day. The principal. Miss Barr, wore a frock of deep blue georgette, patterned in biege. cherry and brown. The skirt was made with a deen knife pleated frill and the plain bodice was finished with a folded belt of cherry coloured georgette. Her wide hat was a brown tagel straw banded with ribbon, and she wore stone martin furs. The members of the staff Present included Misses King. Lee. Ronaldson, Arnott. Marriott, Marshall. McLean.
