A BRILLIANT CLOSE

VINTAGE’S METROPOLITAN (Special to “The Timaru Herald”) CHRISTCHURCH, November 10. Carnival Week concluded at Riccarton in very pleasant weather, a light breeze tempering: the heat of the sun. Again the track was fast, with consequent posting of good times. There was a large attendance, and the totali&ators put through £35,774.. This was less than the £38,325 handled on the fourth day last year, but that was an exceptional day when the figures exceeded those of Cup Day. The aggregate for the four days showed an improvement of £5147, the totals being £110,164/10/- in 1933 and £115,311/10/- in 1934. The Metropolitan resulted in a triumph for Vintage, who carried 9.0 to victory in 2.30 3-5, record time for the Riccarton course, cutting 2-ssec off the previous best for the race. The Shambles gelding shared the honours of the meeting with Sporting Blood, both being undefeated.

The riding laurels were gained by L. J. Ellis, who was in top form and steered nine winners during the four days, thus establishing a substantial lead for the jockeys’ premiership. Officials and riders wore black armbands as a mark of respect to the memory of Arthur Eastwood, whose untimely death was universally deplored. Following are details of the racing: SUBURBAN HANDICAP.
