BABEL AT GAMES
When the Women’s World Games were in progress at the White City London, recently, the arena was flooded with team-managers, interpreters, competitors and officials. The confusion was due very large to the fact that so many nations were represented that the language difficulties became almost appalling. Competitors, unable to make themselves understood, were afraid to leave the arena in cast they missed their events. Apropos of this | difficulty, a little story is told about the j Japanese competitors, who had a parj ticularly trying time. They had taken special English-Japanese phrase-books with them, and consulted these for every need, but still made mistakes in plenty. One day when they were at a restaurant they ordered eggs and were servied with cherry pie!
