MARGARINE MENACE
VICTORIAN PARLIAMENT MOVES A Margarine Bill was recently passed in the Victorian Parliament for the purpose of preventing the use in the manufacture of margarine of liquid or material (other than natural animal fat) of a yellow colour, such as would give margarine the same appearance as butter. It was pointed out that people had been using margarine in the belief that it was butter. A suggestion was • made that margarine should be coloured pink. At the annual meeting of the Colac branch of the Victorian Dairyman’s Asociation the fact was brought to the notice of members that bakers and pastrycooks in the State were using margarine instea dof butter. As it was found that nothing effective could be done to prevent this state of affairs it was decided to interview bakers and pastrycooks and request them not to use margarine. It is interesting to note that the consumption of margarine within the United ingdom is steadily declining. The yearly output per head of popultion was :In 1924, 12.35; in 1931, 10.55; 1932, 9.3; 1933, 8.51 b.
