MONTHLY MEETING OF SCHOOL COMMITTEE THE ROYAL VISIT The monthly meeting of the Fairlie District High School Committee was held in the school, Mr H. Carlton presiding. The Mackenzie County Council advised that the Power Board would he instructed to remove the electric light pole in front of the new gate, also that the Council had voted the sum of £3 towards the cost of laying out a new path from the memorial gate to the school. The Council was thanked for its help in the matter. Mr Carlton stated that the R.S.A. had also helped in the construction of the new path by granting a subsidy of £2 towards the cost, on condition that the work was done by returned soldiers and an equal amount paid in wages by the committee. A vote of thanks was passed to the R.S.A. for their help. The matter was discussed and it was thought that if arrangements could be made for the Duke to break his journey at Fairlie for a few minutes that the children from Fairlie and outlying districts would have a much better chance of seeing the Duke. The cost would also be much less than if they were all taken to Timaru. Mr Carlton moved “that on account of the school holidays and the fact that his Royal Highness will pass through Fairlie. this committee is not prepared to organise a party of school children to visit Timaru.” Seconded by Mr R. Manchester and carried. The headmaster, Mr C. D. Gilling, reported that during the month Mr L. W. McCaskill visited the school, also Miss A. F. Regarding the new residence for the headmaster, the chairman said that officially the committee had received no information in regard to the building. How'ever the plans had been drawn up and the contract was about to be let. On the motion of Messrs Surndge and Shanks it was decided that the large tree in front of the site of the new residence be removed. It was reported that the business men of the township had offered to join with the school committee in the running of the annual picnic. It was decided to accept the offer and to suggest that the committee consist of nine members of each body. Messrs H. Shanks and H. Carlton were appointed visitors for the month.
