ALBURY BEATEN AT CRICKET THURSDAY MATCH The Geraldine Cricket Club’s Thursday team played an enjoyable game against Albury. at Albury, on Thursday afternoon, the local team winning by 11 runs. C. S. Davies, who knocked up 24 before his wicket fell to Davison, was the only Geraldine player to reach double figures, G. Webb, who was caught and bowled by Besley at eight, and E. E. Williams, who was not out at the same total, being the next highest scorers. Cox took five wickets for 19, and Davidson three for 12. Davison, Albury’s highest scorer, had also made 24 when he was bowled by Webb. E. Besley had 14 to his credit when he was caught off Stringer. The other batsmen were dismissed cheaply. G. Webb, four for 16; C. S. Davies, two for nine, and A. H. Stringer, three for 22, shared the bowling honours. GAPES VALLEY INSTITUTE Owing to sickness in the district, there was a smaller attendance at the mjuthly meeting of the Gapes Valley Women’s Institute held in the Hall on Thursday. The president (Mrs J. W. Ashby), occupied the chair. A motion of sympathy was extended to Miss Henderson, Kakahu, in her recent bereavement. One new member, Miss Arthur, was elected. A “link” having been formed with a South African Institute, the first letter was read by Mrs W. P. D. Barker. Prizes, in the shape of plants, were given and presented by Mrs Barker to the members for best blooms for each month since March. The recipients were: Mesdames L. Patrick, E. Patrick, Ashby (2) Mackenzie and the Misses Hall and J. Chapman (2). A gramaphone recital arranged by Mrs Barker was greatly enjoyed. Miss N. Maxwell, as delegate to the half-yearly meeting of the South Canterbury Federation in Temuka, was thanked for her report. A most interesting feature of the programme was a talk by Miss Jerome Spencer, the founder of the Women’s Institute meeting in New Zealand. A hearty vote of thanks to the speaker was carried by acclamation. Competitions, judged by the visitors, resulted as follow: Cold sweets dish, Mackenzie 1, Mrs C. G. Hibbs 2 and Miss J. Champan 3. Best bloom: Mrs W. P. D. Barker 1, Miss J. Chapman 2, Miss A. Barker 3. The tea hostesses were Mrs A. Haywood and the Misses L. Maxwell and I. Bigham. ARMISTICE DAY To-morrow, the sixteenth anniversary of Armistice Day, the local shurches will commence their services at 10.45 a.m. instead of 11 o'clock. The bell at St. Mary’s Parish Church will be tolled for several minutes, and the customary two minutes’ silence will be observed from 11 o’clock. To-morrow evening at 7 o’clock, a combined service will be held in the Town Hall, when an address will be given by the Rev. Canon J. F. Coursey on “The Unity of the Human Race.” Mrs Ross Brodie will be the soloist.
