WAIMATE
A. AND P. SHOW ON TUESDAY GOOD ENTRIES The annual show of the Waimate A. and P. Association, which will be held on Tuesday next, promises to be most successful. The entries are well up to the figures of previous years, and the committee, under Mr D. Macdonald as president, have all arrangements complete for the convenience of patrons. Entries in the various classes are as follows:—Sheep, 203; cattle, 32; Clydesdales, 59; light horses, 105; ponies, 41; pigs, 8; dogs, 18; dairy produce and sundries. 89; Women’s Division, 44; pupils’ cookery, 51; handwriting, 20; wool classing. 6. CRICKET Playing in the Waimate Cricket SubAssociation’s competitions on Thursday afternoon, High School journeyed to Redcliff and secured an outright win over the local club by 25 runs. In their first innings School made 56 (A. Sawell 12, O. Balfour 12), and in the second strike they declared with four wickets down for 83 (W. O'Sullivan not out 26, O. Balfour 38). RedclifFs first strike realised only 38 runs, the only double figure batsman being D. Brown (15). Requiring 101 runs to win with about an hour to go in the second innings, the side was dismissed for 76, Verity (19) and Wilson (20) being the principal scorers. The best bowlers for School in the first innings were F. Morrison (4 for 2), A. Sawell (2 for 7) and L. Foote (2 for 10), whilst Morrison (5 for 19) and O’Sullivan (4 for 16) divided the honours in the second innings. At Morven Domain, Waimate A defeated Morven by 18 runs on the first innings. Batting first, Morven were dismissed for 25 runs, to which Waimate A replied with 43 (J. Studholme 22). To play out time, Morven took a second strike and at stumps had 148 on for 9 wickets, the highest scorers being W. Spencer (40), G. Wilson (34), F. Keen (not out 31) and A. Wilson (11). At Glenavy, Waimate B proved too good for the local team, which was dismissed for 25 runs, J. Neal (6 for 14) and R. Stevens (3 for 9) taking the wickets. A. Cuthbertson (11) was the only Glenavy batsman to reach double figures. Waimate B scored 50 runs (L. Leslie 15), and at stumps had two wickets down for 55 (Leslie 32 not out, R. Stevens 18). The bowlers for Glenavy were C. Fleming (4 for 11), J. Hollamby jnr. (2 for 4), D. Ireland (2 for 5), and J. Hollamby senr. (2 for 24). The following will represent Waimate against Old Boys (Timaru) to-day at 2 p.m.—A. Guy, L. Kilworth, J. Granger, C. Dacre, L. Willetts, R. Stevens, G. Stevens, J. Woods, A. Sawell, L. Chapman, J. Neale. WOMEN’S INSTITUTE At the October meeting of the Arno Women’s Institute, Mrs MacGregor presided over a large atendance of members. Motions of sympathy were passed with Mrs Wright and Mrs McKenzie, senr., members standing in silence. Competitions resulted: Worked table centre, Mrs O’Hara 1. Mrs Campbell 2, Mrs Meredith and Miss I. Dugdale (equal) 3. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs Gynes, Miss Hossack, and Miss Gorman. Miss Allan gave a lesson on folk dancing, and was accorded a vote of thanks. WAIHAO DOWNS At the monthly meeting of the Waihao Downs Women’s Institute, Mrs Allen presided over a large attendance. A vote of sympathy was passed with Mrs Wright in the death of her father. Mrs J. O’Hara gave a demonstration of different knitting stitches, and was accorded a vote of thanks. A competition for best plate of shortbread was won by Mrs D. Tavendale, with Mrs Allen second. The best bloom competition was won by Mrs Miller with a rose, Miss Joan Miller being second with a tulip. A very dainty afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Allen, Preece, Hill and Miller.
