OTIPUA Owing to the prevalence of sickness there was a smaller attendance than usual at the meeting of the Otipua Women’s Institute. Mrs Hill presided. Members from the Claremont, Bluecliffs. Geraldine, and Gapes Valley Institutes were welcomed, and apologies were read from Mrs Hoskins (Pareora), Mrs Mills (St. Andrews) and Mrs Vincent. The resignation of Mrs Cecil Black was received, owing to her leaving the district. Mrs Mills wrote thanking the Institute for the present she had received. The president welcomed Miss Spencer, founder of the Women’s Institute movement in New Zealand. Miss Spencer who proved a most interesting and delightful speaker stated that it was now close on 14 years since she founded the first Women’s Institute in New Zealand, and there were now 770 institutes in the Dominion, proving how very popular and helpful they had become. Miss Spencer was accorded a vote of thanks with musical honours. Mesdames Stowell and Godwin were elected representatives on the committee of Arts and Crafts Exhibition to be held at St. Andrews next year. Competitions for the month resulted —Madiera cake. Mrs Les. Purvis 1. Miss Alma Stowell 2: specimen bloom. Mrs Rooney 1. Mrs Lunham 2. Hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames G. Jackson. H. Lunham and Misses E. Jackson. E. Kinross and N. O’Donoghue. lIUNTER At the monthly meeting of the Hunter Women’s Institute, the vicepresident. Mrs Ayrey. presided over a very good attendance of members. Three new members were enrolled. After the usual business the young women of the Institute took charge. A report, by the two delegates. Mrs Barclay and Miss A. Cooper, to District Ccnference at Temuka. was read. The young people gave two sketches “Everybody Works but Father” and “The King’s Breakfast” which were very much enjoyed. They also had a surprise for the older members by passing round a box filled with smail parcels. When opened they were found to be a stick or tube, of lollies.
