A NEW PROFESSOR
DETAILS OF CAREER Professor Wood, the new Professor of History at Victoria College, graduated B.A. at the University of Sydney in 1925, with first-class honours in philosophy and history, winning university medals in those subjects, also the Fraser Scholarship for modern history. He then went to Balliol College, Oxford, where in 1928 he graduated B.A. with first-class honours in modern history, and M.A. in 1931. While at Balliol College, he was awarded the Herbertson Prize and the Kingston Oliphant Prize. He was War Memorial Scholar in 1929, and Goldsmith Senior Scholar in 1929. In 1928 he was acting-lecturer in history in the University of Sydney and tutor In English history and philosophy at St. Andrew’s College. In 1929 he was acting-sixth-form master at Repton School, Derby, England, where he was offered a permanent position, which he declined. He was also actingtutor in history at Balliol College, Oxford, during that year. In 1930 he was appointed assistant lecturer in history at the University of Sydney, and in 1931 he was made lecturer in history. He was also tutor in modern history for the Workers’ Educational Association. He has written two books and a number of articles in periodicals. His books are “The Constitutional Development of Australia, 1933,” and “A Concise History of Australia,” which is now in the press. His articles in periodicals cover a wide range, including* one on St. Francis of Assisi, several on early Australian history, Fiji and the Fijians. “The Approach of Disarmament,” and “The New Deal in the United States.” His testimonials both from the University of Sydney and Balliol College. Oxford, indicate a very high degree of scholarship.
