MEETING OF HOSPITAL COMMITTEE GENERAL BUSINESS A meeting of the Waimate Hospital Committee of Management was held on Wednesday night. Present: Messrs J. I. Hayman (chairman). H. J. Dash, P. McNeill. G. J. Shackleton, F. Akhurst, J. Dempsey and J. T. Hay. Mr Shackleton said that the committee joined with other local bodies in deploring the death of Mr Walter Hayman who had rendered invaluable service to the district in many and varied directions. He would move that a motion of condolence be passed with the relatives. The motion was carried in Bilence. Mr Hayman stated that the receipts since last meeting amounted to £209 18/10, and accounts presented for payment that day totalled £587/6/4. The chairman of the Finance Committee (Mr H. J. Dash) tabled the following statement of receipts and expenditure for seven months to October 31, 1934: Expenditure, £3977/5/8 (estimate £3878). Capital expenditure, £23 4/7 (estimate £518). Receipts, £IOO9 18/6 (estimate £904). The return of patients showed that the number under treatment at the date of last return was 51; and during the month 53 were admitted, making the total treated 104. Patients discharged numbered 62, leaving 42 still in hospital. The collective day’s stay was 1451 days, and the average number of occupied beds per day was 46.8. The meeting went into committee to consider the question of the installation of an X-ray plant at the hospital, and on resuming in open meeting it was reported that a motion was passed confirming the urgent necessity of the plant for the institution. Superintendent’s Report. The medical superintendent (Dr. A. G. Pitts) reported that the staff had been reasonably busy since last meeting, the work being accomplished smoothly. On October 8 the Waimate Savage Club had given a concert programme at the hospital which was greatly appreciated by the patients. Nurse Dalziel went off on sick leave on October 10, and Nurse McLauchlan on October 22. Nurse Bremner was in Timaru completing her maternity training, and was eligible for a vacancy in another centre. In view of the excellent services Nurse Bremner had given during the whole of her term, it was strongly recommended that the committee should grant facilities for her to accept the appointment. The benefit of the new floor in the men’s sun room was already felt. It was decided to release Nurse Bremner from further duty should she so desire. The report was adopted, and Dr. R. G. Shackleton was appointed as superintendent for the ensuing term. The chairman of the House Committee (Mr J. T. Hay) stated that the tennis court was being prepared for top-dressing and re-battening, and a supply of tar had been procured to top dress the roadways. The annual coat of .vhitewash would be applied to the main building during the month. The concrete floor in the men’s sun room had beeri replaced in wood. The large copper boiler in the laundry required either to be re-conditioned or to be replaced with a wooden trough. The report was approved. W.D.F.U. There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Waimate branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, which was held in the Borough Council Chambers. Arrangements were made for helpers at the stall to be run at the A. and P. Show in aid of the Institute for the Blind. It was decided that the branch should make a donation of £4 to the community chest. Mrs Roy gave an instructive reading on the work of the League of Nations, while practical demonstrations were given by Mesdames C. Stewart (salad-making) and L. Morrison (children’s lunches). In the second innings C.F.C.A. fared slightly better, their total being 69 (P. Hansen 26, T. Calder not out 21).
