BOTH RACES WON BY SCOTT

CHECKING TIMES IN CLASSIC CONTEST

OFFICIAL FLACINGS TO-DAY

United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright (Received November 1, 10.40 p.m.) MELBOURNE, November 1. An unofficial check of the positions in the handicap race reveals that C. W. A. Scott in the D.H. Comet will probably have the shortest time after deducting handicaps, but he is eligible to receive only one prize. K. P. Parmentier will likely be first in the handicap race, and Roscoe Turner would then be second in the speed race, and Ken Waller third. The announcement of the handicap result will be made to-morrow. COMET GIVEN TO PILOTS WINNING PROVES PROFITABLE BUSINESS United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright MELBOURNE, October 31. Mr A. O. Edwards, their backer, has given C. W. A. Scott and T*!' CampbellBlack the de Havilland Comet in which they won the Centenary air race. Mr Edwards said to-day that his contract with the winners was signed before the machine left England and had no winning or losing clauses. “The terms are better than a 50-50 basis,” he said, “but I keep the trophy.” Mr Edwards is leaving for Johannesburg and England on November 3, so Scott will be presented with both the cheque and the cup by the Prince on November 10 at the aerial pageant to be held at Laverton aerodrome. Mr Edwards felt that his share of the £IO,OOO prize had recompensed him for the £SOOO purchase price and heavy preliminary expenses and passed the Comet on. Being chief pilot of the winning machine means nearly £20,000 to Scott. Besides his share in the £IO,OOO prize, he has already accepted contracts from newspapers, publishers, and motor and aviation firms. These will bring him about £15,000 in the next year. A contract from the London “News of the World” for the life stories of himself and Campbell-Black will increase his bank roll by about £6OOO. He will get £2OOO a year from the London “News-Chronicle” as aviation correspondent. This is outside what Campbell-Black gets. SECOND COMET NEARING ENGLAND WONDERFUL FLYING PERFORMANCE

United Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received November 1, 10.30 p.m.) ATHENS, November 1. Cathcart Jones and Ken Waller in the D.H. Comet left for London at 5.25 a.m. (G.M.T.).

JONES AND WALLER RACING HOME Before leaving Melbourne on Saturday, Waller stated that he and Jones intended to reach London in 4 days 171 hours from Melbourne. Owing to the fact that they are spending the night at Athens, however, it seems as if their time will be in excess of the original estimate. They stated, however, that they would not fly at night, and have broken this rule only once from Karachi to Baghdad. The following table shows the fliers’ arrival and departure times at the different aerodromes on the way:—
