AMUSEMENTS

“PALOOKA” AT REGENT FINAL SCREENING TO-NIGHT Jimme Durante, Lupe Velez and Thelma Todd are featured in “Palooka,” an uproarious comedy which will conclude a successful run at the Regent to-night. “Freedom of the Seas” Another breezy, brilliant British screen entertainment from the British International Studios at Elstree. a comedy-melodrama of a spineless clerk who joins the Navy during the war and turns out to be a real hero, is to be enjoyed by patrons of the Regent Theatre, to-morrow. Entitled “Freedom of the Seas,” this high-explosive comedy of thrills, romance and adventure is based on the play by Walter Hackett. Much amusement is provided by the hero’s squabbles wi + h the girl who, despite her inclination to treat him with derision, is gradually won over. Clifford Mollison’s performance in this film, as Smith, is claimed to be his best to date, whilst Wendy Barrie is delightful as Phyllis, with H. F. Maltby as her father; Zelma O’Neal as the chorus girl; Tyrell Davis, Cecil Ramage, Frederick Peisley, James Carew, and Henry Wenman lending excellent support. "HAPPY EVER AFTER ’ JACK HULBERT AT MAJESTIC The British farce, “Happy Ever After,” starring Jack Hulbert, Cicely Courtreidge, Sonnie Hale and Lilian Harvey, which has been delighting Majestic audiences, will be screened finally in Timaru to-night. “Mystery of Mr. X.” With only two exceptions, the cast of “Mystery of Mr X,” the new Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer thriller, which opens at the Majestic to-morrow, is allBritish. Headed by Elizabeth Allen, petite English screen actress, who scored with Herbert Marshall in “The Solitaire Man," the artists include Henry Stephenson, well-known character actor, Ralph Fo“bes, Forrester Harvey, famous for his delineation of Cockney roles, Alec B. Francis, Ivan Simpson, Charles Irwin and Leonard Mudie, who plays the sinister “Mr X.” The exceptions are Robert Montgomery and Lewis Stone, both of whom, although born in America, might easily be mistaken for Englishmen, both in appearance and speech. Adapted from the sensational novel, “X Versus Rex,” the new M-G-M film is set in London, and tells the thrilling story of a duel between Scotland Yard and a maniacal slayer of policemen. Montgomery as a suave crook is forced by circumstances to take a hand in the game, with results that are both sensational and far-reaching SUNDAY CONCERT Sunday evening will witness the last of the theatre concerts for the season, and the Municipal Band has gone to great trouble and expense to give the public a real treat. The artists who will appear are Mrs Ross Brodie, who is well known to radio listeners; the renowned Campbell Bros., who have the largest and smallest concertinas in the world; Mr Dave McGill, baritone, wellknown on the stage and on the air; and Mr Jack Rigby, banjoist. wellknown to Christchurch audiences. The Band appreciates the support it has received from the public and trusts that there will be a bumper house on Sunday.
