PORTRAIT OF PRINCESS MARINA

A portrait of Princess Marina, intended as a present for the Duke, is being painted by Philip de Laszlo, the artist, at his studio in Fitzjohn’s Avenue, Hampstead. ““The Princess of the picture looks at you serenely, charmingly, across the studio.” writes a “Daily Mail” representative, who saw the unfinished canvas soon after the Princess and her mother left the studio. Her head is poised beautifully on her long slender neck, and across her hair is a simple band of silver ribbon. The face is turned slightly to the right, and she wears about her shoulders a white silk cape trimmed with ermine. From her ears hang the pearl and diamond earrings given her by the Duke of Kent. A Perfect Sitter. On the slim, graceful left hand at her breast is the magnificent sapphire engagement ring from her fiance. “That left hand, that lovely left hand,” chuckled Mr de Laszlo, “had to be in the picture. The Princess insisted that the engagement ring should be shown in the portrait. But why not, it is truly a magnificent ring. “She is the most perfect sitter, so unassuming, so still, and so enchantingly lovely. It will be a good portrait. Who could doubt it with that sweet smile that has made her so popular in England. It is a joy to paint her portrait, she is so natural and dignified, and her interest in art makes her a great help. Also, you must remember, I have known her since she was a child, and have painted portraits of most of her family.”

Princess Marina has received from the Northampton Boot Manufacturers’ Association a beautiful pair of shoes carried out in special crushed calf, which has long been known to the trade as Marina calf. The Princess sent an appreciative acknowledgment.
