In the House of Lords, Lord Melchett drew attention to the uncoordinated state of industry in Britain compared with the United States, Italy, Germany, Japan and Russia. He sought the Government's intentions regarding the nationalisation of industry, and intimated his intention of introducing a Bill on the subject. Lord Hailsham. replying, said plans for reorganisation should come from the industries themselves. Govern-
ment assistance would be forthcoming when sought. The Government was not ashamed of the past three years’ record. The country’s production had increased, exports revived and unemployment decreased.
