ROWING

TIMARU CLUB The first two heats of the Timaru Rowing Club's elementary fours were rowed on Tuesday, although a light wind from the east bumped up the sea outside the harbour, and the bents shipped a fair amount of water during the races. The new members gave a good account of themselves, although conditions were hardly ideal. In the first race crews stroked by T. Tapp and R. Bifecefield competed. From a good start Bracefield’s crew gained a slight advantage, and half way along the Extension had half fe length on their opponents. Approaching the harbour Tapp commenced to draw up on the leaders, and the crews entered on even terms. Coming down the harbour Tapp gradually forged ahead fend reached the wharves threequarters of a length to the good. Bracefield then sprinted and drew up to within a few feet of the leaders, but Tapp’s crew responded to his call and drew away to win by three-quarters of a length. In the next ifece W. Davies’ and J. Mitchell’s crews met. Mitchell’s crew jumped away with the lead and entered the harbour a length ahead and continuing to draw away reached the whferves with one and a half lengths’ advantage, maintaining that to the finish. Owing to the rough weather outside the harbour last night it was found necessary to row two further heats in the inner harbour. V. W. Hargreaves’s crew beat H. Tapp’s crew and F. Hartley’s crew beat N. Cruickshanks’s crew.
