SPORTING

RICCARTON NOTES CUP CANDIDATES Special to “ The Timaru Herald.” CHRISTCHURCH, October 31. On account of the spacing of the jumps, the Brush Hurdle races at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting will finish at the second winning post which in the past has been used only for four, five and six furlongs races. The withdrawal of Argentic left A. H. Eastwood without a ride in the New Zealand Cup, in which he already has handled two winners, Chide and Fast Passage. He has been mentioned as a possible pilot for more than one other candidate including the The Smuggler and Nightform. but no definite arrangement may be reached until Friday. Silver Sight, in addition to being left in the New Zealand Cup, has an engagement in the Riccarton Handicap on Saturday. His trainer, S. Barr, stated this morning that the horse would definitely be a starter in the Cup, but added that no rider had yet been secured.

The Smuggler is one of the horses in the New Zealand Cup for whom no rider has yet been engaged. A. McKenzie. trainer of the Southland gelding, will wait until the arrival of the owner before he definitely engages a jockey. Since The Smuggler arrived on the scene he has attracted a good deal of attention among track watchers. He has the best staying credentials in the Cup field, as he was third last year while on a subsequent visit ne won the Great Autumn Handicap. He bears a well trained appearance and it will not be for lack of condition if he fails on Saturday. Red Manfred has gained friends since he made his appearance at Riccarton. He has thickened out since here a year ago and now looks a much improved horse. Though he has not won a race this season he has been placed in his last four starts and looks ready to show his best in the Cup. His stable mate. Pin Money, is also in great order and is being freely discussed as a Stewards’ Handicap prospect. Tout Le Mond was exercised in the jumping ring this morning when he cleared the obstacles very creditably. His recent form on the flat has been disappointing but he might be induced to go better if tried as a hurdler. The Southland mares Steeton and Cough will be bracketed in the New Zealand Cup. They are both owned by Mr T. Baird, who races Cough himself while Steeton is raced on lease bv J. B. Maceregor. Other brackets on Saturday will be as follows.—Linwood Handicap. Top Rank and Tuirau: Riccarton Handicap. Southdown and Cleaner, Emotion and Passion Fruit. C.J.C. MEETING By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH. October 31.
