GERALDINE

SUCCESSFUL OPENING CEREMONY

LADIES’ BOWLING CLUB The recently formed Geraldine Ladles’ Bowling Club was launched on its career yesterday afternoon, when, in the presence of about 100 enthusiasts and friends, the Club, which has been granted the use of the Geraldine Bowling Club’s green, was declared open for play by the Mayor (Mr B. R. Macdonald). A special bus from Timaru conveyed lady players from the Timaru, Highfield, Kia Toa, West End, and Ashbury Clubs, and representatives were also present from the Temuka Ladies’ Bowling Club. Members of the Geraldine, Temuka. and Highfield Men’s Clubs also attended. The president of the Geraldine Ladies’ Club (Mrs A. G. Brown), who extended a cordial welcome to those present, said that as yet the club was not a large one, but the members were full of enthusiasm. She felt that she had been a traitor to her beliefs, as she had formerly thought of bowls as esentially a man’s game, and an old man’s game at that! (Laughter.) Today, however, the game was very popular with the ladies, but in her wildest dreams she had never believed that she would become the president of a Ladies’ Bowling Club. (Applause.) Mrs Brown thanked the president of the South Canterbury Ladies’ Bowling Association (Mrs G. B. Sewell) for the great interest she had shown in the new club, which had encouraged it immensely. Mrs Brown also paid a tribute to the members of the Geraldine Bowling Club, who had helped the ladies in every way. The members had made their green available, had provided bowls and appointed coaches, and. moreover, had welcomed the ladies to their green. They greatly appreciated their co-operation. In thanking the members of visiting ladies’ clubs for their attendance, Mrs Brown remarked that she hoped it would not be long before they would again meet in friendly games. They had a wonderful day for the opening, and everything was in the Club’s favour. (Applause.) The president of the South Canterbury Ladies’ Bowling Association (Mrs G. B. Sewell) remarked that the opening of a new club could be regarded as its birthday, the day of all days, and they would recognise the keen interest shown by the large number who had come out from Timaru to wish the Geraldine Ladies’ Club a happy and prosperous year. She expressed a hope that before next year they would join up with the Association, which would further the interest in bowls in South Canterbury and promote the spirit of friendliness and make life all the more pleasant for all. Mrs Sewell wished the Club a happy future. The president of the Geraldine Bowling Club (Mr A. G. Brown), who commented on the large attendance of ladies, remarked that it appeared doubtful if it had been a wise step to admit the ladies to the green, as it looked as if the men would be invaded. (Laughter and applause.) However, it was the wish of the Men’s Club that they should make the ladies at home, and it was very nice to see such a number to give the new club a good send off. The men’s club would do all in its power to assist, and had nominated several of its number as coaches, and he hoped the ladies would soon pick up the advice they proffered. He wished the Club a successful season and an enjoyable time at the game. Mrs Brown, who then introduced the Mayor (Mr B. R. Macdonald), expressed regret at the absence of Mrs Macdonald. who was unavoidably absent in Timaru.

The Mayor, who expressed thanks for the invitation to attend, remarked that he was glad that there were a few of those trampled creatures called men present, but, no doubt, they were doing their best to keep their end up. It was not only good to be out on such a perfect day, but it was pleasing to see so many smiling faces. Many might imagine that the ladies appealed to him, and in this case he was more than satisfied. (Laughter.) Continuing in facetious vein, the Mayor concluded by declaring the Club opened, and wishing it a successful career. (Applause.) The patroness of the Geraldine Ladies’ Club (Mrs W. L. Harrison) then took the opportunity, on behalf of the members, to present Mrs Brown with a bouquet of tulips, and she also received a bouquet from the ladies present. A bouquet was also handed to Mr Macdonald for the Mayoress, the presentation being made by little Pat and Fay Burmester. Mrs Harrison sent up the first “kitty,” and Mrs Sewell played the first bowl. A dainty afternoon tea was provided by the members of the new Club.
