In the fat cattle section 290 head of pleasing quality were forward, but the entry proved too many for butchers While extra heavy bullocks and heifers almost held last week's values, all other sorts showed an average drop of 15'a head in a somewhat erratic sale, while several lots were passed. Extra prime heavy bullocks made to £l4/17/6. prime heavy £lO/2/6 to £ll/7/6, prime medium £8 12/6 to £9/17/6. light and medium £7/7/6 to £B/7/6. best heifers to £9'2 6, medium heifers and young cows £5/17/6 to £7 2/6, and light and medium from £4/7/6.

The store cattle section was well supported, 326 head being submitted to auction. The bulk of the entry comprised three and four-year-old steers, and included a good consignment from Otago Peninsula. There was keen competition throughout and the top price was £7/10 - for a pen of forward conditioned four-year-old Hereford steers. The usual assortment of cull cows made full late rates. In the dairy section there was a small entry of 30 head, mostly indifferent quality. The market was lifeless and sales were difficult to effect even at reduced rates. The entry of 2000 fat sheep included a wide selection of excellent wethers both woolly and shorn. The demand concentrated on these and on extra heavy prime maiden ewes and on an average values were 1/6 a head lower than last week with competition very slack at the conclusion of the sale At this stage there was a further drop of 1/- to 2/- a lead in values with frequent passings. Extra prime heavy woolly wethers sold to 32 3. shorn to 26 -. prime heavy woolly 28/- to 30/7. shorn 22 - to 24 7, prime medium Wholly 24 - to 27 7, shorn 20 - to 21/6, light and medium woolly 20/- to 23/-. extra prime heavy maiden ewes to 30 3. prime heavy 25 - to 27/6, prime medium 22 6 to 24 -, light and medium 19/-. to 22/-.

Just over 100 lambs of average good quality were offered. Opening prices were 1/-, and closing rates 2- a head lower than last week.

The entry of fat pigs numbered 89. There was a brisk sale, both baconers and porkers being in keen demand. The former realised up to £4 6 - and best porkers sold to £2 16/-. About 120 store pigs were yarded. Competition was particularly keen and all classes were readily disposed of. Large stores sold to 29/- and suckers from 14/- to 21/-.
