BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR AND JUNIOR STEEPLECHASES KEEN COMPETITION The annual steeplechase contest of the Timaru Boys’ High School, held in connection with the annual athletic sports, took place on the Highfield golf links yesterdaj' afternoon. In the junior event there were about 110 competitors, the course being about two and a half miles. The senior event was contested by about 130 runners, who were required to cover a distance of approximately three miles. The juniors were sent away first, and after they had got well on their journey, the seniors were despatched in groups every ten seconds. The results were:— Junior Handicap. P. W. Walker 1 D. McLeod 2 E. O’Donoghue 3 Time, 15mins. 35secs. The winner’s time was 14min. 20secs. Walker was successful in the same event last year. Junior Championship. G. Newton 1 R. Mclnnes ~. .. 2 A. O. Baker * 3 Time —14mins. 41secs. Senior Handicap. D. Squire 1 J. Bannennan 2 N. J. Collins 3 Senior Championship. R. J. Winnington 1 W. Bailey 2 B. Sara 3 Time —15mins. 34secs. . ANNUAL SINGING CONTESTS The annual singing contests were held at the School, the senior division being judged by Mr Razel Wood, and the junior by Mrs W. I. Ta4t.’In the senior for the Kennedy Cup, the competitors were required to sing “Loch Lomond,” and an own choice. The result was:— R. J. Winnington (“You Along O Me”) 1 R. Milligan (“I Pitch My Lonely Caravan”) 2 A. E. Allchurch (“Time Was I Roved the Mountains”) 3 Little Cup. In the junior division for the Little Cup, the competitors sang “Killarney.” The placings were:— W. Castle 1 A. Clemens 2 D. Irving 3 The accompaniments were played by Mr H. B. McClatchie.
