TIMARU LADIES’ CHAMPIONSHIP

TITLE RETAINED Playing steady and at times highstandard golf in the senior championship final of the Timaru Ladies’ Club at Highfield yesterday, Miss Jean Horwell won the title for the fourth successive year' I ’when she beat Mrs N. Hawkes, who was club champion in 1929, 5 up and 4 to play. It was expected that the result would be closer, but Mrs Hawkes did not reproduce the form shown in recent matches and lost strokes around and oh the greens. Miss Horwell gave a steady exhibition and while both players were impressive in their long games, Miss Horwell approached and putted better than her opponent. She often made brilliant recoveries. The links were in good condition, but excursions off the fairway were usually costly. The greens were at times difficult to handle. At the end of the first nine holes, which Miss Horwell covered in 38 against Mrs Hawke's 41, she was 3 up and her steadiness brought victory at the 14th green. The Play. North East was halved in well-play-ed 4’s, Miss Horwell becoming 1 up when she placed her approach to within 18 inches of the pin at The Slope green to hole in bogey figures against her opponent’s 5. Each player took 4 to reach Burnside area, which was halved in 6’s, Mrs Hawkes squaring the match at Bumpy where she had an advantage from the tee, her drive assuring her of a 3 to Miss Horwell’s 4. The finalists halved Hillside in s’s, but at The Knob Miss Horwell was better placed with her drive. Her second was close to the pin and she holed in bogey 3, one stroke better than Mrs Hawkes, to become 1 up. Mrs Htiwkes, who found the rough from The Ridge tee, reached the green in three, while Miss Horwell who played a good second to the green was down in 4 against Mrs Hawke’s 5. The Chasm was halved in bogey 4’s. At Lindsay’s Miss Horwell’s drive reached the rough, Mrs Hawkes being well up the fairway. Miss Horwell played a perfect second to become pin high, Mrs Hawkes’s second finding the bunker to the right of the green. She was short of the pin in 3 and took two putts, Miss Horwell being close to the hole with her third and down in 4, to finish the outward journey 3 up. Miss Horwell was well away from Seaview tee, but Mrs Hawke’s drive was assisted by the easterly wind to go out of bounds. Miss Horwell reached the green in 4 and was close to the hole with her fifth. Mrs Hawkes, who was a stroke behind, picked up. Miss Horwell was on the edge of The Dive green from the tee with Mrs Hawkes slightly wide of the putting area. When Mrs Hawkes was not up with her approach, it looked like another win for i her opponent, but Miss Horwell missI ed an easy putt for her third and the ; hole was halved in 4’s. The Poplars was played in 6's while Port Arthur was also undecided in 4’s. Both were through The Terrace green with their drives, but Miss Horwell was better placed with her second and took the hole 3-4 and the championship 5 and 4. The cards read: Miss Horwell — Out: 44645344 4—38. In: 6 4 6 4 3—23 Mrs Hawkes— Out: 45635454 5—41. In: 7 4 6 4 4—25. Mrs M. Minifie was umpire. Junior Championship. Mrs Perrier became junior champion when she beat Mrs Hunter 6 up and 4 to play. Mrs Perrier played steady golf and had a good lead at the end of the first nine holes. Mrs O’Callaghan was umpire. “BEST OF LUCK” ART UNION RESULT OF THE DRAW By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON, October 30. The “Best of Luck’’ art union was drawn this morning.
