Durham Leaves Liverpool. Advice has been received that the Federal Company’s new motor ship Durham left Liverpool on October 15 on her maiden voyage to Australia. Sold East. Two Union Company cargo steamers, the Komata and Kaimanawa, have been sold to Eastern buyers to be broken up for scrap. The two vessels are to leave New Zealand about the middle of December next for Japan on their last voyage. The Komata is to tow the Kaimanawa on the long trip of over 5000 miles, which is expected to take about five weeks. Both vessels have been laid up for some time past, the Komata in the stream at Wellington since October 30, 1932, and the Kaimanawa at Auckland since July 1, 1931. The full crew for the Komata and a skeleton one for the Kaimanawa are to arrive in New Zealand early in December, and the Komata will then proceed to Auckland to take the Kaimanawa in tow. Built in 1907 by Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson, Ltd., Newcastie-on-Tyne, the Komata is a single screw steel steamer of 2115 tons gross. She has spent practically the whole of her active service in the coal trade of Westport and Greymouth. After the war she was fitted with limited passenger accommodation, and for a number of years maintained a regular weekly passenger service between Wellington and Westport. The Kaimanawa, a steel single screw steamer of 2416 tons gross, was built at Flensburg in 1909. Originally the John Heidman, she was one of the German vessels taken over by the British Government after the war, and Was bought by the Union Company in December, 1920. She also has spent most of her active life in the coal trade both before and after her purchase by the Union Company. Besides trading out of Westport and Greymouth the Kaimanawa made a number of trips in the company’s cargo service between Australia and New Zealand, principally from Newcastle with coal. Both vessels have had comparatively uneventful careers. NEW ZEALAND PORTS By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, October 30.
