Mr H. J. Kennedy, of Invercargill, paid a brief visit to Timaru yesterday. Messrs R. Spiers, Christchurch, and R. J. Walker, Dunedin, are guests at the Empire. Mr F. Tisdell, Christcurch, and Mr R. J. Bruce, Dunedin, are staying at the Dominion. Mr Harold Clarke, “The Gums,” Pleasant Point, is leaving to-day for Melbourne to attend the Centenary celebrations. Sir James Mills, chairman of directors of the Union Steam Ship Company, is en route to New Zealand by the Rangitane, which is due at Wellington on November 21 from London. Mr C. J. Lockie, for ten years accountant at the Whangarei Post Office, has been promoted to the position of post office inspector, with headquarters at Christchurch. After nine years of service in the interests of the farmers of Taranaki, Mr J. M. Smith, of the Fields Division of the Department of Agriculture, has received notice of his transfer to Dunedin on promotion as fields superintendent in charge of the Southland and Otago districts. The Rev. James Aitken, M.A., who has been minister of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Gisborne, for 19 years, has resigned the charge. His resignation will take effect from the end of this year. Mr Aitken was elected moderate of the Presbyterian General Assembly in 1927. After more than 20 years service, Mr L. B. Pearson recently retired from the position of manager of the South Canterbury office of the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company. Mr Pearson was met by 30 members of the staff, when he was presented with a solid leather suitcase and a travelling rug. In making the presentation. Mr W. S. Minehan referred to Mr Pearson's long association with the Timaru office and wished him happiness in his retirement. After other members of the staff had supplemented Mr Minehan’s remarks. Mr Pearson briefly acknowledged the presentation.
