Two thousand cheered the Mahatma Gandhi on his arrival for the opening of Congress. The Committee attempted to persuade him to continue his active association, but he refused, saying that the congressmen were overpowered by the sense of defeatism. If they succeeded in restoring faith in passive resistance, he would rejoin their ranks.
