GREAT BRITAIN v. AUSTRALIA FIRST TEST MATCH EVER PLAYED uuilfU eitjba As-bociauuu —fcaecuu i eiegrapu c opyrtgut (.Received October 28, 6.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, OcLooer 27. The first golf test match ever played between Great Britain and Australia was commenced on the Australian Club’s course at Kensington to-day. Four singles matches over 36 holes were played, with the following results: L. McLean (Great Britain) defeated J. Ferrier (Australia), 5 up and 4 to play. L. Garnett (Great Britain) defeated Apperly (Australia), 5 up and 4 to play. T. McKay (Australia) defeated the Hon. Michael Scott .Great Britain), 2 up and 1 to play. M. Ryan (Australia) defeated T. Bourne (Great Britain), one up.
The Play Described. McLean played very steadily in the morning round to lead two up. He was only three times off the fairway and approached accurately. He had a stroke round of 72, par being 71. Ferrier on the other hand was erratic. McLean was never off the line in the afternoon, winning easily. Garnett outdrove Apperly but was less accurate with his irons. He led one up at lunch. Garnett played brilliantly in the afternoon, however, averaging fours when the match finished. The Hon. Michael Scott’s contest with McKay was marked by very bad golf. Both were frequently in the bunkers and putted weakly. Bourne and Ryan had a great struggle. Bourne had a tendency to push out his shots, but he recovered well. Bourne looked like giving Britain a 3-1 lead, but Ryan holed out from the swamp to square the match at the thirty-third hole and evenually won after Bourne's drive at the last hole finished awkwardly behind a tree. The foursomes matches will be played on Monday.
