Naturally the certainty of cheap water-power has drawn attention to the manufacture of nitrates. One such source is Bowen Falls, by the shore of the famous Milford Sound, with an estimated capacity of 35,000 horse-power. The falls are close to deep water, and there is an enormous supply of excellent limestone in the vicinity. When this article was being written, a syndicate was negotiating • with the Government for a grant of rights to develop power at the Falls. It is estimated that cheap hydro- | electric power will figure importantly ! in the development of iron and steel ' manufacture in New Zealand. A plant at Christchurch uses about 1000 | horse-power of Coleridge current in 1 smelting scrap. Electric furnaces have ' been used for smelting the iron-sand 1 of which the North Island’s West Coast holds immense quantities. Experts • expect that perseverance with electric ■ processes will solve the problems latent i in the fineness of the ore and the presence of titanium.
