REPLACEMENT OF TOWER

WORK IN RIVER BED Quite separate from the Waitaki dam work was another job undertaken by Mr Packwood and his staff. This was the replacement of a tower in the bed of the river below the main Christchurch-Dunedin highway, the old towers having been washed away by a flood. This work necessitated the construction of four great concrete piles, 40 feet below water level, and the work was quite as hazardous as any done at the hydro. This work was completed in good time, and a very high steel tower was built. This has carried the main transmission lines for the past four years. The spans of wire on each side of the tower are about half a mile long.
