THE WAITAKI DAM ON THE VERGE OF COMPLETION.— The Waitaki hydro-electric scheme as it appeared on the verge of completion. The illustration gives some conception of the massive and expansive nature of the dam, 1800 ft in length, 120 ft in maximum height and 145 ft. in thickness at the base. On the left, is a clearly defined view of the power house, a, handsome buidding which forms an integral part of the dam and which is 350 ft. long, 150 ft. wide and 130 ft. high. In the background are the workers’ cottages, while beyond the snow-covered mountains supply a rugged setting to the scene. On the right the once peaceful Awakino Valley, which has provided the basin for the lake formed by the closing of he dam.
